Edinburgh named top European ‘culture city’

Edinburgh has been rated the top “cultural and creative city” of its size in Europe in a major new study which explored 30 different countries.

The Scottish capital was ranked alongside Paris and Copenhagen, which topped the categories for bigger populations, in the European Commission findings.

Researchers took the “cultural pulse” of 168 cities across Europe, examined how much the creative industries contributed to each economy and explored their efforts to attract talent and encourage participation in the arts.

Key factors taken into account included the range of arts venues, historic attractions and landmarks, the number of overnight stays recorded, and attendance at theatres, concerts and cinemas. The number of jobs in arts, culture, media and communications were considered, along with university rankings and the number of university graduates in subjects like arts and humanities.

San Diego’s 52nd Annual Cabrillo Festival

Be a part of history and welcome 16th century explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo as he steps ashore on Ballast Point, Saturday, September 30, 2017.

Journey back to September 28, 1542 when Cabrillo, a navigator sailing under the flag of Spain, landed at San Diego. Stepping ashore on Ballast Point, he was the first European to land on the west coast of what is now the United States of America.

The Cabrillo Festival is a fun event for the entire family, with educational activities, cultural demonstrations and exciting folkloric performances. Brightly colored clothing and dramatic music and dancing bring to life the traditions of the Native American, Mexican, Portuguese and Spanish cultures that are part of the Age of Exploration. The Cabrillo Festival features food booths with delicious traditional Mexican, Native American, Portuguese and Spanish food. Vendors will showcase their various artistic goods.

The highlight of the Cabrillo Festival is the re-enactment of Cabrillo’s landing on the shores of San Diego Bay. “Cabrillo,” his soldiers and a priest sail into the bay on San Salvador (The Californian), and once again claim the land for Spain.

SD Taichung July 2017 Newsletter

(Recap of our official visit to Taichung on 3/7 ~ 3/8/17)

Members of our Advisory Board and their spouses began an Official Taichung City Visit on March 7 with Taichung City Government: Deputy Mayor Mr. Chang, Finance Bureau Director Mr Lin, Cultural Affair Bureau Director Mr. Wang, and Economic Development Bureau Deputy Director Mr. Li. We missed Taichung Mayor Lin (林佳龍), as he took a team to Japan doing Taichung Products Promotion to a special show.

We were presented with an old Taichung City Flag, simple yellow background and red characters, and then were treated with an elegant lunch at Lin Hotel. That afternoon we visited Mr. Lin Po-Rung, the former mayor who signed the Sister City agreement 33 years ago (1983). Then we toured the Hui-Wen High school led by principal Cr Pay-Chang Wang. Students gathered to present us a speech and gifts. At dinner we were treated to very fancy Japanese cuisine by John’s personal friend, Vedan Group Chairman Mr. Tou-Hsiung Yang.

On March 8 Finance Bureau Director Mr. Lin and his niece took us to visit Sun Moon Lake and Pu-Li Shaosing Brewery. Unfortunately, it rained all day, preventing us to really view the beautiful lake scenery. We were treated to a delicious lunch at Pu-Li with their local cuisine. After returning to Taichung, we visited Mr. Lin’s niece’s house and treated with a famous old downtown restaurant Hsun-Yuan Spring by Doctor Hong, Mr. Lin’s good friend.

This official visit was really wonderful in enhancing the friendship between two cities. We had chances to meet many people and treated with many delicious meals, and each Taichung City Official prepared nice and meaningful gifts and local products for us to bring home.
